Citizen Eco-Drive Capacitor Battery Replacement Guide (295-38, 295-55, 295-5100, 295-5600)

Which Citizen Eco-Drive capacitor do you need? Movement codes and battery sizes for 295-38, 295-55, 295-5100 and 295-5600, with what each listing states.

How these part numbers are written

Citizen Eco-Drive cells turn up under more than one spelling. The same capacitor can be written 295-38, 295.38, or with a CT prefix as CT295.38. Longer forms like 295-3800 and 295-5600 usually carry extra digits from the movement family the cell serves.
That matters when you are ordering, because the number printed on a dead capacitor does not always match the number in a shop's listing. Any of the spellings is fine when you write to us: send the number you can read off the old part, and we will match it against the catalogue record.

Cross-reference: what each capacitor is listed for

The table below copies the figures stated on our own listings. Where a listing does not state a figure, the cell says so rather than guessing.

A note on the 295-38 row. Our record for that capacitor carries the model number CT295.56, which does not agree with the 295-3800 in the listing title. We are not going to paper over that: if 295-38 is the number you need, tell us and we will confirm the correct part before anything is sent.

Two lists that are longer than the table

Two of these capacitors are documented far beyond the movement codes above.
The 295-5600 / CT295.56 listing continues through the E-series and H-series: E710M, E711M, E712, E712M, E715M, E716M, E717, E717M, E760M, E760N, E761, E761M, E761N, E765M, E766, E766M, E767M, E768M, E810, E810M, E811M, E812, E812M, E816, E816M, E817M, E820, E820M, E860, E860M, E865M, E870, E870M, and the H410–H437 family through H500, H501M, H504M, H570M and H571M. The listing also states that this capacitor is a replacement option for Citizen capacitor 295.40.
The 295-5100 listing carries an unusually long list of Citizen models, including E000M, E001M, E010M, E011M, E013M, E030M, E031M, E068M, E100M, E101M, E106M, E110M, E111M, E168M, E410G, G430M, G431M, G530G, H500M, J700, J710, J730, J800, J810, J830, J850, plus case references such as BM601055A, BM666459E, BM684457L, BW0072-07P and CO22088034.
Both lists are long enough that copying them here would bury the point. If your movement code is not in the table above, that does not mean the cell is wrong for you — it means the code is in one of these longer lists or in neither, and that is exactly what we check.

How to work out which one you need

Three things identify the right capacitor, in this order.
1. The movement code, not the watch model. The code is usually stamped on the movement itself, and often printed inside the case back or on the paperwork that came with the watch. For Citizen Eco-Drive this is normally a letter-and-number combination such as E111M or B110M. Match that against the movement codes in the table.
2. The battery size code. MT920 and MT621 appear in the table. A cell that physically matches one of these codes but is listed for different movements is usually a different capacitor, so treat the size as a cross-check rather than the deciding factor.
3. The old part. If the watch has already been opened, the number on the capacitor you are removing is the most direct evidence. Read it before you dispose of it, and photograph the way the contacts sit before lifting it out.

Before you replace anything

Eco-Drive capacitors are charged by light, and they do not tolerate the test gear used on ordinary cells. Our 295-56 listing states plainly that a battery tester or voltmeter should never be applied to these capacitors, because it can affect their ability to hold a charge. If you were about to reach for a tester to confirm a diagnosis, that step is the one to skip.
The wider sequence — opening the case back, recording the orientation of the contacts, fitting the replacement the same way round, and checking that the case back gasket is seated and lubricated before the back goes on — is set out on the individual product pages. Those pages also cover what happens after fitting: with a Kinetic movement the rotor needs roughly 400 turns, and with an Eco-Drive or solar movement the watch needs strong light, in both cases until the second hand stops double-skipping. If the watch still misbehaves after that, the listing suggests re-checking the fitting, the charging method and the charging duration before treating the movement as faulty.
We are stating what our listings state. We are not Citizen, and nothing here is an official repair instruction.

Numbers we do not list

Some capacitors have no movement list on our pages at all, and some movement codes will not appear anywhere in our catalogue. That is normal for a parts business: the catalogue carries what the supplier documents, not every watch the cell has ever been fitted to.
If your number is not here, send it anyway. A movement code, the number off the old capacitor, or even a clear photograph of the cell in place is enough for us to check. That is the message we answer most often, and it is the fastest route to a definite answer.

Send us your number

Tell us the movement code or the part number you need — 295-38, 295-55, 295-5100, 295-5600, or something else entirely — and we will confirm what is available and reply within one working day.

FAQ

Is 295-56 the same as 295-5600?

Both numbers refer to the same capacitor in our catalogue, and our listing records it as CT295.56. The longer form appears in the listing title. Either spelling is fine when you write to us.

My watch takes a 295-40 capacitor. Can I use the 295-56?

Our 295-5600 listing states that this capacitor also acts as a replacement option for Citizen capacitor 295.40. We would still rather confirm it against your movement code than have you assume — send the code and we will check.

Can I test an Eco-Drive capacitor with a voltmeter to see if it is dead?

Our listing states that a battery tester or voltmeter should never be applied to these capacitors because it can affect their ability to hold a charge. Treat the double-skipping second hand and the charging behaviour as your indicators instead.

The number on my old capacitor does not match anything on this page.

That happens. Some cells carry supplier-specific or movement-specific numbers that never make it into a general catalogue. Send the number and a photograph of the capacitor, and we will work back from it.
