Watch Crown, Stem and Tube Replacement Guide: Sizes, Threads and O-Rings
Crowns, winding stems, crown tubes and the O-ring seals behind them: what each part is, how to measure it, and the sizes listed in our catalogue.

Most crown and stem jobs go wrong at the ordering stage, not at the bench. The crown head is measured when the tube is the worn part, the O-ring is ordered from one diameter instead of two, or the stem is guessed because nobody checked the thread — and a small error buys a part that will not seat, seal or thread. Here is how to tell the three apart, measure each one, and read our listings.
The three parts, and how to tell them apart
Part | What it does | How to recognise it |
|---|---|---|
Crown | The head you grip to wind and set; threads onto the stem and closes against the tube. | Sits proud of the case, usually knurled. Its size is the head diameter, in mm. |
Crown tube (pipe) | The steel sleeve fixed in the case; carries the stem and gives the crown its seal. | A short cylinder standing out of the case side. A worn tube leaks even when the crown looks fine. |
Winding stem | The shaft linking crown to movement, carrying the winding and setting action. | A thin rod, threaded at the crown end on common builds; extenders thread on when a case sits deep. |
The stem is movement-side; the crown and tube are case-side. A caliber alone never tells the whole story.
How to measure before you order
Measure in millimetres. Digital calipers resolving to 0.01 mm are ideal; 0.1 mm works for crown heads but is too coarse for tubes and threads. Measure twice.
What to measure, part by part
- Crown head diameter. Across the widest point of the head. Our assortments run 3.0 mm to 8.0 mm and 3.5 mm to 6.0 mm, so compare your figure against those ranges.
- Tube outer diameter. Measure the tube itself, never the hole it sits in. The dies and tips across our tube tools span 0.9 mm to 2.65 mm, so this is careful work.
- Stem thread. Two threads appear in our extender listings, 0.7 mm and 0.9 mm. Establish which one your stem carries before choosing an extender.
- O-ring, two numbers. Both gasket kits state sizes as outer diameter by inner diameter. Take the ring off, let it relax, record both figures in that order.
The mistakes that cost money
- Measuring the crown head, then ordering a tube — or the reverse. Not interchangeable.
- Reading an O-ring compressed in its groove; a relaxed ring measures differently.
- Trusting a title over the size chart. Where the two disagree, send both readings and ask.
- Guessing from the caliber. The movement constrains the stem; the case sets the crown and tube.

Water resistance: the O-ring is the job
When a listing says waterproof crown, the working part is the O-ring. In common designs the ring sits inside the crown and seals against the tube, so the seal depends on a correctly sized ring, a clean and round tube, and a crown closed home. Both gasket kits above state sizes as outer by inner diameter. Renew the ring whenever the crown comes off; it is the first part to fail. Final proof of any seal is a pressure test after assembly; no listing can promise that.
When your case is not in the tables
These tables are assortments and kits, not a lookup keyed to your watch: a single crown size for one reference, a tube matched to one case, an O-ring outside the popular runs, or extenders for calibers other than the 2824, 2836, 2035 and 2671 sets above. So is any listing where title and chart disagree. In all of these cases, do not guess — send the job to us and let us do the matching.
I need a [part] for a [caliber] with a tube OD of [x] mm and a crown head of [y] mm. Which size from your kit applies, and can you send the size chart?
Send the numbers, we will match the parts
Send the model, the measurement or the part number — whichever you have. We will confirm which listing applies, send the full size chart, and answer every enquiry within one working day.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which crown size to order?
Measure the head diameter and compare it with the ranges above: 3.0–8.0 mm on the black kit, 3.5–6.0 mm on the gold and silver kits. Between sizes, send the measurement rather than guessing.
My movement is a 2824 — which extender do I need?
The ten-type set is listed for 2824 and 2836, with adapters stated as 0.9 mm thread in 10.5 mm and 5.5 mm lengths. We do not match from a caliber alone — send caliber and thread measurement and we will confirm.
Can you check a part against my watch before I order?
Yes. Send the model, the measurement or the part number and we will check it against the listing and send the size chart. A question first is cheaper than a return.
What does waterproof mean on these crowns?
It means the crown seals with an O-ring rather than a friction fit. The ring is the wearing part: it must match its groove and tube, and it should be renewed whenever the crown comes off. Proof comes only from a pressure test after assembly.
Are you affiliated with any watch brand?
No. We are an independent supplier and are not affiliated with, authorised by, or a dealer for any watch brand. Brand names appear only where a tool is listed for that brand in the maker's own wording.
