Seiko Alpinist SPB121 Spring Bar Guide: Sizing, Quick-Release Options, and Essential Watchmaker Tools

We do not sell the strap itself — we sell the spring bars and tools. Sizes, thickness options, quick release vs double flange, and how to measure a lug width before ordering.

A regular inquiry arrives at our bench asking whether we stock replacement parts for the Seiko Alpinist SPB121 strap. To be direct and transparent: Kocandy does not supply finished leather watch straps or leather bands. What we do supply are the precision stainless steel spring bars, quick-release conversion pins, rivet-end tubes, and dedicated watchmaker tools required to swap, fit, and secure watch straps without marring case lugs. Choosing the correct pin length and body thickness prevents loose strap play, bent pivots, and accidental strap detachment during wear.

Spring bar sizes: the two critical measurements before ordering

Every spring bar is defined by two foundational dimensions: uncompressed overall length (which must match your watch's internal lug width) and bar body diameter (tube thickness).
First, the uncompressed length of the spring bar body is engineered to span the exact gap between the inside faces of the watch lugs. When fully expanded inside the case, the main body rests flush between the inner lug walls while the two stepped pivot tips engage the drilled lug holes. Ordering a spring bar that is too short allows the pivots to slip out under load, while ordering one that is too long prevents both pivots from seating simultaneously.
Second, the bar body diameter determines the clearance of the pin passing through the leather or rubber strap sleeve. Standard dress and sports watch straps use bar diameters ranging between 1.5 mm and 1.8 mm. If a spring bar is too thick for a strap sleeve, pushing it through will stretch, distort, or tear the leather lining. If the bar is too thin, the strap will rock front-to-back around the pin, causing uneven friction against the case edge.

Seiko Alpinist SPB121 case dimensions: hedged specs and bench measurement

For owners of the Seiko Alpinist SPB121 (as well as related reference models in the same case family), the lug width is commonly listed as 20 mm across enthusiast documentation and reference databases. However, because case tolerances, aftermarket end links, and historical production variations can alter physical clearances, you should never purchase replacement hardware based solely on published model names.
Before ordering any replacement pins, measure the physical gap between the internal lug walls of your own watch case using the following three-step procedure:
  1. Lay the watch face down on a soft microfiber pad or bench mat to prevent bezel scratches.
  1. Position the internal jaws of a vernier caliper flat against the parallel inside surfaces of the two lugs at the pin hole centerline to read millimeters across both lug pairs.
  1. If you do not possess a caliper, align a fine millimeter steel scale directly over the lug span under bright bench lighting to record whether your measurement reads 20.0 mm or a non-standard dimension.
Once you confirm your physical lug width, examine whether your watch case features drilled through-holes on the outer lug flanks or solid outer walls. Solid lug cases require double-flange shoulders or quick-release levers to retract the pivots during removal.

Quick-release spring bars vs standard double-flange pins

Quick-release spring bars incorporate a tiny cylindrical lever that projects perpendicular to the spring tube. By sliding this integrated lever inward with a fingernail, you retract the sprung pivot without sliding a metal fork against polished case lugs.

To use quick-release hardware, your leather or rubber strap must feature a pre-cut access slot on its underside sleeve. If your strap does not have this cutout, standard double-flange spring bars remain the industry standard for conventional enclosed sleeves. Double-flange pins feature raised concentric ridges near each tip, giving traditional fork tools purchase during compression.

Rivet-end pins and threaded lug tubes: when standard spring bars do not apply

Certain specialized leather straps, heavy bracelets, and reinforced sports watch cases rely on rigid rivet-end pins or threaded lug screws rather than telescopic spring bars. These assemblies use a solid stainless steel cross-tube flanked by decorative dome or flat end caps that screw or press into place.
If your watch strap uses drilled-through lugs secured by external screws, standard spring bars cannot be substituted. For these cases, we supply multi-size stainless steel link pin sets with 1.3 mm and 1.5 mm tube diameters in both silver and gold finishes, as detailed in the catalog table below.

Spring bar removal and installation tools: pliers, forks, and push pins

Executing a clean strap swap requires the appropriate hand tool to compress spring bar shoulders without slipping against the watch case.

When working with fitted solid end-link bracelets or tight-fitting leather straps, spring bar plier tools compress both ends of the spring bar simultaneously, allowing the strap or bracelet end piece to slide straight out of the lug recess without cocking sideways. For traditional leather straps where each flange is compressed individually, manual fork and pin tools provide tactile feedback and drilled-lug ejection.

Securing watch cases and bands: strap holders and link workstations

Holding a watch case and strap in your fingers while applying leverage with a steel tool is the most common cause of slipped tools and scratched lug surfaces. Securing the strap inside a dedicated holder block immobilizes the assembly, leaving both hands free to align spring bar tips or remove link screws.

Our bench fixture selection includes the plastic dual-block set shown above as well as the wooden watch band holder block (model CH00000056) (52 x 52 x 28 mm). Both designs feature stepped vertical slots to grip bands gently, along with pre-drilled base holes for rigid bench mounting.

Bench safety, brand compatibility, and sizing checklist

Kocandy is not affiliated with, authorised by, or a dealer for any watch brand, including Seiko, Rolex, Omega, Citizen, Longines, Breitling, Oris, ETA, or Bergeon. All brand mentions, model designations, and compatibility references in our catalog represent stated manufacturer specifications and catalog listings only.
Before submitting an inquiry, verify this four-point bench checklist:
  • Internal Lug Gap: Measure physical lug width in millimeters with a caliper rather than relying on model names.
  • Lug Construction: Check for drilled outer through-holes (requiring 0.8 mm push pins) or solid inner walls (requiring double-flange forks or quick-release levers).
  • Strap Sleeve Cutout: Confirm that your leather or rubber strap has underside lever clearance slots before ordering quick-release pins.
  • Tube Clearance: Check that your strap sleeve accommodates the required diameter (1.5 mm, 1.78 mm, or 1.8 mm) without binding.
